Moving a piano is not like moving a couch. Pianos are heavy, fragile, and expensive, and they need to be handled with care and precision. At D&D Logistics, we’ve helped many homeowners, schools, and churches in Rapid City, South Dakota move upright and grand pianos safely.
If you’re planning a piano move, here’s what you should know:
1. Weight and Fragility Go Hand in Hand
A typical upright piano can weigh anywhere from 300 to 800 pounds, while a grand piano can top 1,000 pounds. Despite their size, they’re also delicate. The internal strings, keys, and pedals must stay in perfect alignment or the instrument’s performance suffers.
That’s why proper equipment, technique, and team coordination matter.
2. Tight Spaces and Stairs Can Be Tricky
Many homes in Rapid City have tight doorways or stairwells that make piano moving even harder. Our team plans the route ahead of time, removes any obstacles, and uses heavy-duty dollies and moving boards to maneuver the piano without causing damage to your home—or the instrument.
3. Professional Equipment Is a Must
We don’t rely on muscle alone. We use specialized piano dollies, skid boards, and lifting straps to reduce strain and improve control. We also wrap the piano in moving blankets to protect its finish from scratches and dents.
4. Transportation Matters Too
It’s not just about getting the piano out the door. We secure it properly in the truck using straps and padding, making sure it stays upright and stable through every turn, bump, or hill in the Rapid City area.
5. Tuning May Be Needed Afterward
Even with a perfect move, pianos sometimes need tuning after relocation due to changes in humidity and temperature. We can recommend trusted piano tuners in Rapid City if needed.
